Can I plug my (bass) combo amp into a cabinet?
My Ampeg combo amp can put out about 220W, and the cabinet i’m looking at can handle a peak of 400W, if I plug my combo into the cabinet (on full blast/220W), will the cabinet produce ONLY 2320W or the full 400?
i’m using the ‘line out’ of my amp to put it in the speaker.
A combo amp is an amp and a speaker together. A head is the amp by itself. If you are using a combo with a speaker AND a separate speaker cabinet then both speakers will split the wattage but will also alter the ohm load. Depending on the ability of the amp and the ohm rating of the speakers you can get a higher wattage with a lower ohm setting.
REMEMBER; the 220 watt rating is an RMS rating. RMS stands for root means square and means the amount of CONTINUOUS wattage that the amp can put out. It is capable of pushing a much higher amount of wattage for a brief moment known as PEAK wattage which can be more than twice the RMS rating.
Since the cabinet that you wish to run is capable of taking a 400 watt peak out put you should be fine. If you are combining it with the speaker in your existing amp make sure that both speaker loads have the same ohm rating or you can cause the amp to work way too hard and overheat
