i prefer active speakers because you can hook them right up to the mixer without the extra (heavy) amplifier.
if you want good heavy bass then i’d recommend getting a powered sub as well (maybe even two).
i don’t personally like cranking the bass on the mains because then it’s not as clear, what some would call muddy.
basically have the high, mid-high, mid, and low-mid coming from the mains and the lows from the sub.
if you have the money i’d get active three-way speakers and a couple of powered subs.
